ANKARA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Supreme Military Council (YAS) convened on Wednesday in the capital Ankara, and is expected to focus on senior armed-forces appointments.

The meeting started at Cankaya Mansion with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim chairing the event, along with Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli, Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar and senior army commanders present, according to local media.

This meeting is a bi-annual gathering which discusses the appointments and retirements of high-ranking staff officers and generals, as well as the removal of military personnel.

It is the third YAS meeting since the last year's failed coup attempt, and military reassignments and promotions are expected to be discussed.

Turkish President Erdogan is expected to host a dinner for YAS members at the presidential complex on Wednesday evening.

Decisions taken at YAS gatherings will be announced after being ratified by the president.
