KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- An explosion rocked near an airport in Kandahar city, capital of Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar on Wednesday, with feared casualties, local police sources said.

"The blast occurred in Shoorandam locality when a foreign forces' military convoy was passing by the area at around midday," the sources told Xinhua, adding that it was suspected to be a suicide car bombing.

Security forces have cordoned off the area, which is located in Police District 5 of the city, for precautionary measures.

The blast caused a plume of grey smoke to rise above the scene, according to witnesses.

"So far, we have no more details and we still cannot provide details on causalities. There is fear of possible causalities," the sources said.
