MEXICO CITY, July 31 (Xinhua) -- A Mexican journalist, Luciano Rivera, was shot dead in the early hours on Monday in a bar in Rosarito in the northwestern state of Baja California.

The murder took place in a bar in the center of Rosarito, a city 16 km from the border town of Tijuana, according to a statement issued by the state's prosecutor-general.

An investigation has been opened and a man, identified as Alfredo N., was arrested by police as he travelled in a taxi carrying a firearm.

Rivera, 33, was an editor for the local channel CNR TV Noticias, and a reporter for a news website.

Police told the local press that witnesses said Rivera was shot in the head. The suspect was arrested in the ongoing search.

In a news report, CNR TV Noticias said that Rivera had fallen victim to the climate of insecurity and "permanent instability" which is present in Rosarito and Baja California.

Rivera is the eighth journalist killed in Mexico since March, which has led the government to vow to improve protection for the profession.
