6 armed militants killed in northern Algeria

ALGIERS, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Algerian army troops on Monday killed six armed militants in an ongoing counterterrorism operation in the upper woods of Tipaza province, 60 km western the capital city of Algiers, Defense Ministry said.

The source specified that the counterterrorism troops retrieved also five arms of Kalashnikov and RPK types, in addition to explosive stuffs.

The source further noted that this wide scale operation has been launched on July 23, as it is still underway, adding that it led to the killing of eight terrorists so far.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats.

A few militants affiliated to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and recently established Daesh affiliate groups are still taking refuge in the dense woods in the north, and remote desert areas near the troubled Libya and Mali.
