DUBAI, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said on Thursday that it has lifted ban on imports of all fruits and vegetables from Jordan.
The lift came after a meeting between the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, and Jordanian Minister of Agriculture, Khalid Hneifat, according to a statement from the UAE ministry.
The Jordanian minister briefed his Emirati counterpart on the measures taken by the Jordanian government to ensure the safety of Jordanian agricultural products.
The ban lift "is based on the condition that imported agricultural products have no pesticide residues in accordance with the standards adopted in the UAE," the statement said.
"If any pesticide residue is found on a fruit or vegetable in an amount higher than the permitted limit, the concerned importer will be banned from importing the produce for three months," according to the statement.
The desert state UAE with about 10.5 million inhabitants has to import 90 percent of its food, according to Euler Hermes, the world's leading provider of trade-related credit insurance solutions.
