ISTANBUL, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Thursday detained at least 26 people, including 17 foreign nationals, over their suspected links to the Islamic State (IS), local media reported.
Backed by special forces, the counterterrorism units of the police carried out simultaneous operations at 14 addresses in nine districts of Istanbul, seizing documents and digital materials linked to the jihadist group, state-run Anadolu Agency said.
According to the agency, some of the suspects had previously fought with the IS in Syria.
Turkey has deported some 5,000 suspected terrorists and banned 53,000 others from entering the country in its counterterrorism efforts, state officials were quoted as saying.
