Shallow quake of 5.8 magnitude hits eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A shallow quake measuring 5.8 magnitude jolted Maluku province in eastern parts of Indonesia on Thursday evening, the meteorology and geophysics agency said here.

The quake struck at 19:08 p.m. Jakarta time (1208 GMT) with epicenter at 81 km southwest Buru Island and the depth at 10 km under earth, Slamet Wijaya, an official of the agency told Xinhua by phone.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."

Moderate quakes have often triggered damages and casualty in Indonesia.
