PARIS, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of French firemen on Wednesday are still struggling to contain a huge wildfire which still menaces the southeast, notably in the department of Var where 10,000 people have been evacuated, according to local authorities.

The department of Var where popular resorts are located experienced "a violent spread of fire" on Tuesday night. Ten thousand civilians, including 3,000 campers, have been asked to quit their homes in Bormes-les-Mimosas town where 800 hectares have already been destroyed.

A total of 3,000 hectares have been ravaged in the region by fierce fire which broke out on Monday. Ten firefighters were wounded, the department of Var said in a statement.

About 2,000 firefighters and 19 aircraft, including 10 Canadair water bombers, have been mobilized to battle the flames in southeastern France.

The French government has asked its European Union partners to send two extra air tankers to fight the wildfire. The summer in France has been exceptionally hot and dry.
