Taliban overrun Jani Khil district in Afghan eastern Paktia province: Local media

GARDEZ, Afghanistan, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants after days of fighting overrun the center of Jani Khil district in the eastern Paktia province on Tuesday, a local television channel Tolo reported.

"Taliban insurgents after fierce fighting captured the center of Jani Khil district today morning," Tolo reported in its news bulletin.

A local official on the condition of anonymity told Xinhua that the "Taliban entered the center of Jani Khil district early today and the security forces retreated."

Zabihullah Majahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in contact with media asserted that the Taliban fighters have already stationed in police headquarters of Jani Khil district.

Meantime, Interior Ministry in a statement released here denied the fall of Jani Khil district and stressed that the "Defense and Security forces are in commanding positions" and fighting has been continuing.

It also noted that reinforcement has been sent to Jani Khil district.

Taliban militants have captured Kohistanat district in Faryab and Taiward district in Ghor province over the past week.
