JERUSALEM, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Staff of the Israeli embassy in Jordan, including a guard who shot dead two Jordanians after being stabbed outside the embassy, have returned to Israel on Monday night, said an Israeli statement.
His return, together with the Israeli ambassador to Jordan and the rest of the embassy staff, has ended a day-long crisis between the two countries, commentators said.
A statement released by the Israeli foreign ministry said the staff has returned through the Allenby crossing.
"The return of the envoys was made possible thanks to a tight cooperation between Israel and Jordan," the statement read.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked over the phone with the ambassador and guard, "and congratulated them for their return," according to the statement.
Jordan had refused to allow the guard to leave before being investigated after he shot and killed two civilians, including a man who stabbed him with a screwdriver.
Earlier on Monday night, an Israeli official denied Israel was holding talks with Jordan about returning the security guard in return to lifting the controversial metal detectors that Israel has installed at the entry to the al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Jordanian media reported that King Abdullah asked Netanyahu in a phone call to remove the metal detectors.
The move came as U.S. President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy, Jason Greenblatt, arrived in the region to support efforts to reduce the violence that was sparked by the detectors.
Greenblatt held meetings with Netanyahu and King Abdullah.
Israel placed the detectors in the wake of a shooting attack that claimed the lives of three Israeli policemen last Friday.
The detectors also triggered protests and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces, which claimed the lives of at least four Palestinians.
