U.S. dollar climbs on upbeat data

NEW YORK, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose against most major currencies on Monday as economic data from the country came out overall positive.

The seasonally adjusted Markit Flash U.S. Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers' Index) for July increased to 53.2, hitting a 4-month high, from 52.0 in June. The latest reading also beat market consensus of 52.0.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted Markit Flash U.S. Services Business Activity Index registered at 54.2, higher than market expectations.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.16 percent at 94.006 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1641 U.S. dollars from 1.1678 U.S. dollars, and the British pound climbed to 1.3034 U.S. dollars from 1.3001 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar added to 0.7922 U.S. dollar from 0.7921 U.S. dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 111.12 Japanese yen, higher than 111.07 yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9459 Swiss franc from 0.9440 Swiss franc, and it edged down to 1.2510 Canadian dollars from 1.2534 Canadian dollars. Enditem
