GENEVA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Two Japanese mountain climbers were missing on Friday and found dead Saturday in an incident as they climbed the Monch in middle Switzerland, local police said Saturday.
According to the information made public by the local Bernese police, the two are a 73-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman. They lost their lives by falling over the south face in the summit region.
Local media reported that before falling they climbed towards the Monch on Friday morning from the Monchsjoch hut, on the normal route of the southwest ridge.
The cause of the incident remained unknown, however, an investigation towards it has been launched.
The Monch, lies on the border between the cantons of Valais and Bern, is a mountain in the Swiss Alps and together with the Eiger and the Jungfrau, it forms a highly recognisable group of mountains that are visible from far away.
