RAMALLAH, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday warned Israel against imposing heightened security checks in Al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem.

Abbas said the moves are violating international legitimacy, according to the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

He also urged the Arab and Islamic world to support Jerusalem and the steadfastness of Palestinians.

Israel installed last Sunday metal detectors at the entrance of Al-Aqsa mosque compound after three Arab citizens of Israel carried out a shooting attack on Friday, killing two Israeli policemen.

The Palestinians demand the removal of the metal detectors and all Israeli security measures at Al-Aqsa mosque, honoring the historical, legal and religious status of the city.

Hundreds of worshippers have been holding prayers outside the gates of the compound, which has led to clashes with Israeli forces and several injuries over the past five days.

According to WAFA, Abbas has made several contacts with world powers to discuss the ongoing Jerusalem tension.
