FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Three militants including Mullah Noorullah, the Taliban key commander in northern Badakhshan province, were killed on Thursday, said Abdul Khalil, an army spokesman in the region.

"Security forces, acting upon intelligence reports, stormed a Taliban hideout in Sapand Gul area of Argo district today morning, killing Taliban notorious commander Mullah Noorullah along with two of his bodyguards," Khalil told Xinhua.

Four more insurgents sustained injuries in the firefight which lasted for a while, the official added.

Mullah Noorullah, according to the official, was a notorious insurgent and key commander of the Taliban group in Badakhshan province, who was behind the murder of two female police officers in Argo district a couple of months ago and terrorist attacks in parts of the restive province.

His death could prove to be a major blow to the militants, the official added.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Badakhshan province have yet to make comments on the report.
