GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, on Wednesday said it was deeply shocked and saddened at reports of the deaths and injuries of a number of internally displaced persons (IDP) in an aerial attack on Yemen's Taizz governorate.

UNHCR said the incident was reported on Tuesday afternoon, and while the number of civilian casualties are still being verified, initial reports point to at least 20 deaths.

Most of those killed are believed to have been from the same family were reportedly displaced from another district in the Taizz governorate.

UN figures show that 27 percent of Yemen's IDPs originate from Taizz. The Taizz governorate itself is also host to 15 percent of Yemen's IDP's, or some 303,672 individuals.

According to the UN, there are two million internally displaced people in Yemen who have fled elsewhere across the country since the beginning of the conflict in 2015.

"This latest incident once again demonstrates the extreme dangers facing civilians in Yemen, particularly those attempting to flee violence, as they disproportionately bear the brunt of conflict," UNHCR said in a statement issued Wednesday.
