TIRANA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Albanian Ministry of Interior said Tuesday that the Albanian government sought assistance from neighboring countries and NATO to cope with the fires that have recently engulfed the country.

"Albania is in a situation of emergency as there are more than 90 activated fires across the country," Albanian Interior Minister Dritan Demiraj told reporters Tuesday after inspecting some of the sites in northern Albania.

According to him, although all structures had been mobilized to cope with the emergency situation created by fires, the assistance from other countries as well as NATO was deemed as crucial to end the problem.

He also warned tough measures against all those citizens setting fires deliberately. According to a report from the Interior Ministry, over 70 percent of fires were started deliberately.

Meanwhile, the authorities here confirmed that local government is also assisting the structures engaged in fire extinction.
