MADRID, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A 39-year-old Spaniard killed in the June London Bridge terrorist attack has been given a posthumous award by the Spanish National Police.

Ignacio Echeverria, who tried to protect an injured police officer from three knife-wielding terrorists with nothing more than his skateboard as a weapon, has been awarded an honorary Medal of Police Merit for his courage, the Spanish National Police Force confirmed.

The man was working in a bank in London. Aware of his act, British Prime Minister Theresa May acknowledged the "heroism" he displayed in the attack, which claimed eight lives and left 48 injured.

This is the second posthumous award for Echeverria, following the "Cross of Civil Merit" by the Spanish prime minister when his body was taken back to Spain on June 10.
