NEW DELHI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 school children were injured in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Punjab on Monday, a senior police official said.

"The accident happened when a school bus carrying some 20 children rammed into a stationary truck in the state's Hoshiarpur district in the morning. The van driver failed to see the truck due to heavy rains," he said on condition of anonymity.

All the injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital and most of them were discharged after treatment by afternoon, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident and the driver of the truck could be arrested for parking the vehicle in the middle of the road in heavy rains, the official said.

"The school bus driver sustained minor injuries in the accident," he added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents often occur due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
