WINDHOEK, July 15 (Xinhua) -- More than 5,000 people have been resettled in Namibia in the past 26 years, according to a report released by the land reform ministry Friday.

The figure was released at the eastern city of Gobabis, about 190 kilometers from Windhoek, during one of the ongoing consultative meetings being held across the country ahead of the second land conference scheduled for September.

The Government of Namibia, the report said, has bought 513 farms with a total of 3 million hectares for 1.7 billion Namibian dollars (about 129 million U.S. dollars).

Namibia is currently facing huge protests over the land issue with some tribes whose ancestors lost land during the German and South Africa occupation demanding preferential treatment.

Although land reform minister Utoni Nujoma postponed the land conference last year citing lack of money, there has been intense pressure on the government to convene the meeting.
