COTONOU, July 15 (Xinhua) -- The Beninese government on Friday said it has received 32.47 billion Cfa francs credit (about 57 million US dollars) from the Dutch group Rabobank to face coastal erosion in the economic capital Cotonou.
The support provided by the international financial services provider will finance protection works on the eastern coast of Cotonou that encompasses about ten neighborhoods, a release here on Friday said.
The works are expected to secure a 15km coastline between the city of Seme-Kpodji and the economic capital Cotonou.
Recent research conducted by Benin's ministry responsible for quality of life and sustainable development reported a yearly progress of over 10 meters of the sea on the land in Benin.
The encroachment tends to engulf the eastern part of the economic capital Cotonou.
Already, it destroyed roads, hostels, cultivated lands and hundreds of houses along the coastline.
