Nairobi bourse ends week low as energy stocks dominate

NAIROBI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) ended the week Friday on a low as both equity turnover and key index declined.

The bourse traded 33 million shares worth 8.5 million U.S. dollars, down from 70 million shares worth 17 million dollars on Thursday in a session dominated by energy sector stocks.

Similarly, the NSE 20 Share Index closed the week at 3,642.90, down from 3,659.28 points while the NSE All share Index (NASI) went up to 153.13 from 152.99 points.

During the session, local investors traded as much shares as foreigners, with the former accounting for 49 percent of the shares while the latter 51 percent.

The foreigners mainly traded Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Safaricom and East African Breweries Ltd while locals electricity generator KenGen and KenolKobil.

Kengen was the top traded stock during the session after moving 6.8 million shares at 0.07 dollars, a rise of 1.3 percent.

Uganda's power distributor Umeme was the second best traded stock after transacting 5.6 million shares at 0.12 dollars, a decline of 8 percent.

At the secondary bond market, turnover dropped to 10 million dollars from 16 million dollars in the previous session. Enditem
