NEW DELHI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the boat tragedy in India's western state of Maharashtra has risen to eight as authorities have fished out all the bodies and called off rescue operation, officials said Tuesday.

"All the eight bodies have been fished out from the dam," an official said.

On Sunday, a boat carrying 11 people capsized near the Vena Dam in the middle of the Vena reservoir, around 30 km from Nagpur city.

While eight persons drowned, three persons managed to swim safely.

Reports said the group had come to reservoir for a picnic and were taking selfies and recording their moments on board of a boat for social media.

Reports said India has recorded highest number of selfie-related deaths, following the new culture of taking selfies.

Last year authorities declared 16 no-selfie zones around India's financial capital Mumbai city, after several deaths of people were reported while taking their own pictures.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has readily adapted the new popular culture, and is often seen taking selfies with people and world dignitaries.

In April, 13 people drowned after boat carrying them capsized in southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
