LONDON, July 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Peng Shuai was defeated by world No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania 6-4, 7-5(7) in the second round of women's singles event at Wimbledon here on Friday.

The 31-year-old Peng, who won the doubles title in 2013, broke Halep in the first to go ahead 3-1 but was broken back immediately. The same thing happened in the second set but it was again Halep that won the most crucial points as Peng made more unforced errors.

Peng's exit means that none of the six Chinese women reached the fourth round.

French Open finalist Halep will next take on former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who is playing her first Grand Slam tournament since the birth of her son Leo seven months ago.

"I'm really happy - I've improved with every match [at Wimbledon]," she said. "I was sad [after losing the French Open final] but I was realistic about what I did well and what I didn't do well. My game is at a high level. That defeat didn't bring me down."
