BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Williams has created a hi-tech carrier for critically ill new-born babies needing emergency transportation.

The Formula One technology which protects the racing drivers from high-speed crashes has been adopted by Williams in building the carrier.

Every year, the Williams Formula One team spends over 130 million dollars to design and improve the fastest cars in the world, competing with its rivals such as Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull in F1 races.

The technology and expertise developed at such huge expense have been put into wider use by Williams Advanced Engineering, a sister business of the Formula One team.

This time, Williams Advanced Engineering, creates a carrier named “Babypod 20” -- the new type of transport for newly born babies.

The Babypod looks like a sleek box with a transparent lid on top. It is heavily padded inside to transport critically ill infants.

It is not easy to carry new-born babies as constant temperature and close medical monitor are required. In the past, heavy, inconvenient incubators were used, which asked for external electricity supplies.

Now thanks to Williams, the Babypod which weighs just over nine kg and takes up little space becomes a more practical alternative.

The rather simple looking carrier is constructed using carbon fibre as material, the same incredibly strong material used in Williams’ F1 cars.

Able to withstand a crash of up to 20G-force, the lightweight device provides a safe environment for babies transporting to hospitals in medical vehicles that travel at speed.
