SEOUL, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Imported car sales in South Korea posted a double-digit growth last month due to demand for German luxury models, industry data showed Thursday.

According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), the number of newly registered vehicles that were imported from overseas was 23,775 in June, up 22.6 percent from a month earlier.

The double-digit growth was mainly attributable to robust demand for cars made by German automakers.

Mercedes Benz sold 7,783 vehicles in June in the domestic market. It marked the first time that any foreign carmaker sold over 7,000 cars on a monthly basis.

It was followed by German automaker BMW which sold 5,510 vehicles. Japanese carmaker Honda came next with 1,750 cars sold, but its sales were far lower than the figures tallied by the German companies.

Lexus sales ranked fourth with 1,272 cars sold, trailed by U.S. automaker Ford with 1,173 vehicles and Land Rover with 962 units.

For the first six months of this year, imported car sales amounted to 118,152 units, up 1.2 percent compared with the same period of last year.
