LOS ANGELES, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A giant American flag began to fly Tuesday in Grove Creek Canyon, Utah state for Independence Day celebration, and the organizers claimed that it was the largest American flags ever flown in the Canyon.

The flag is going to stretch across the canyon from July 4 until July 10, according to the website of a local group called "Follow the Flag" which called on hundreds of volunteers to help carry the flag up to the canyon.

The giant American flag, covering more than a quarter acre, is even bigger than one and a-half NBA basketball courts, says Fox 13 News.

The flag cost about 15,000 U.S. dollars to create. It is the third successive year that "Follow the Flag" has brought a large flag to hang between the canyon walls as a symbol of patriotism.
