DUBAI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Tuesday in Abu Dhabi that Germany supports the UAE's efforts at confronting those who fund extremists, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The German minister made the remarks during a news conference when meeting his United Arab Emirates (UAE) counterpart Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.

The minister affirmed that the UAE is Germany's closest and most important partner.

Gabriel is on a three-day mediation tour in the Gulf Arab region in order to help to find a political solution to the diplomatic rift between the Saud-led quartet and Qatar.

The four Arab states cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on June 5 and imposed a transport ban to and from the Gulf state by closing their land, sea and air borders for Qatari vehicles, ships and planes.

The quartet also issued 13 demands to Qatar over its alleged support of extremism which they say Doha must meet or face further sanctions.

The deadline to meet the demands was on Monday but extended by 48 hours through Kuwaiti mediation.
