VILNIUS, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The European Union's future and security, Brexit negotiations, energy and nuclear security issues were on the top agenda during the official visit of first vice-president of the European Commission Frans Timmermans to Lithuania on Monday.

"I always knew Lithuanians as people who cherish our common values and unity; I came to Vilnius in order to know your vision of Europe in which you prefer to live," Timmermans was quoted as saying in a statement released by the European Commission.

He met with President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Viktoras Pranckietis.

"It is time for the European Union to move from abstract discussions about the future to deeds through ensuring people's safety, security and prosperity," Grybauskaite was quoted as saying during the meeting with the EC vice president.

A series of cyber-attacks that shook Europe, security, economic and migration challenges demand a responsible political rather than verbal response, she underlined.

Meanwhile, Skvernelis noted during the meeting with Timmermans that the Lithuanian people welcome the country's membership in the EU, thus Lithuania will put efforts in order to ensure unity of the EU member states.

"We are firmly convinced in the significance of contribution of all EU countries in creating our common future," Skvernelis said.

While speaking during the joint press conference with Skvernelis, the first vice-president of the EC said that he understood the importance of the energy sector to Lithuania and promised to seek support to Lithuania in this area.

"I understand how important the energy union is to Lithuania; we must achieve a bigger interdependence within Europe in order to reduce our dependence on external energy suppliers," Timmermans was quoted as saying by local media.

In his words, more regional projects in the energy sector should be created.

"Lithuania is a very pro-European country; I will do my best to support your interests in the European Commission," the vice-president of the EC said.

Timmermans is responsible for better regulation, interinstitutional relations, the rule of law and the charter of fundamental rights at the EC.
