NEW DELHI, July 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and over 30 others injured in a major road accident in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Saturday, a police official said.

"The accident occurred when a private passenger bus skidded off the road, turned turtle and then fell into a farm land near the Radhanagar crossing in the state's West Midnapore district," he said on condition of anonymity.

While two passengers died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of five are said to be serious, the official said, adding that the bodies have been sent for an autopsy.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the bus was travelling at high speed and the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend near the Radhanagar crossing, a busy intersection.

The bus was carrying some 40 passengers, including a driver and a conductor, and going to Ghatal from Pirakata when the accident happened.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents are often caused due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
