JERUSALEM, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplane struck a mortar position of the Syrian army near the disputed border between the two countries on Friday, after an errant projectile landed on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, Israel said.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that an Israel air force aircraft "targeted the Syrian military position that fired the mortar in the northern Golan Heights."

It was the fifth time since last Saturday that errant fire from the war-torn country hit the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, without causing injuries or damage. In most cases, Israel retaliated the fire with strikes.

Israel had repeatedly declared it would not intervene in the internal fighting in Syria.

However, it is widely believed that Israel often carried out airstrikes on weapons convoys in Syria, and has been providing medical treatment to hundreds of wounded Syrians who reached the border.
