ACCRA, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The government of Ghana will soon initiate a probe into the alleged sale of contaminated fuel to the public by state-run Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation company (BOST), the Ministry of Energy announced here on Wednesday.
It said the Ministry of Energy will set up an eight-member investigative body to probe the matter.
"The Ministry's attention has been drawn to the various media reports on the issue of the release of 5 million litters of off-spec fuel from the Accra Plains Depot of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST)," the statement noted.
The downstream industry regulator, National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has issued a statement revealing that BOST has so far evacuated a total of 471,000 liters of the contaminated oil to Movenpinaa Energy and the product is in the market.
"We wish to assure the general public, that the Ministry is determined to ensure that the integrity of the quality of petroleum products supplied in the country is protected," the statement signed by Boakye Agyarko, Minister for Energy assured.
The committee shall also determine if the product can be corrected, if not, then suggest the alternative use for the product as well as review the transaction.
There is a raging storm in Ghana over the alleged sale of contaminated fuel to the market by BOST contrary to the government's quest to sanitize the petroleum marketing space in order to protect consumers.
Both the parliamentary minority and energy think tank, Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) have been leading calls for a high-powered probe into the matter. Enditem
