ABUJA, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Terror group Boko Haram has claimed it had abducted 10 policewomen in Nigeria, local media reported on Wednesday.

In an online video monitored by The Punch, a local newspaper, a Boko Haram leader identified as Abubakar Shekau said the security agents were kidnapped last week in the northeastern state of Borno.

Nigerian authorities are yet to react to the claim by Boko Haram.

In 2014, the Nigerian military had reportedly killed Shekau, the man who claimed to be the leader of the terror group in that video.

Boko Haram has been blamed for the deaths of more than 20,000 people and displacing of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since their insurgency started in 2009.

The group kidnapped more than 200 school girls in Chibok, a community in Borno State, in April 2014. So far, 106 of the abducted schoolgirls have been rescued.

At least 1,400 suspected members of Boko Haram are currently held in a detention center in the country's northeast region.
