VILNIUS, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) signed an agreement on Tuesday, admitting the Baltic state as an associate member of CERN.

The agreement was signed by CERN's Director General Fabiola Gianotti and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius at the country's Presidential palace on Tuesday.

President Dalia Grybauskaite said Lithuania is the first among the Baltic States joining CERN as an associate member. She hopes the cooperation will open more opportunities for the country.

Currently, CERN has 22 member states and Lithuania has become the 5th associate member state. Lithuania and CERN have been cooperating since 1993, while a cooperation agreement was signed in 2004.
