JERUSALEM, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Israel launched strikes on Hamas military infrastructures overnight between Monday and Tuesday, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The action was a response to what IDF said was a rocket landing in the regional council of Sha'ar HaNegev in southern Israel on Monday night, without causing any injuries or damage.
"IAF (Israel Air Force) aircrafts targeted two military infrastructures that belong to the Hamas," a military spokesperson said in a statement. Hamas is the Palestinian Islamist group that controls Gaza.
The targets were located in the northern and southern areas of the besieged Palestinian enclave.
No injuries were immediately reported, according to local media.
No organization immediately took responsibility for the rocket but Israel holds Hamas accountable for any fire from the enclave, even when the rockets were launched by militant groups challenging Hamas.
The fire came as Gaza is coping with a spiraling crisis since Israel has decreased the electricity it provides for the besieged Palestinian enclave after the Palestinian National Authority said it will pay only 70 percent of Gaza's electricity bill.
Since Israel concluded its 51-day military campaign in Gaza in the summer of 2014, sporadic rocket fire from the region persists in southern Israel, usually causing no injuries or damage. Israel often retaliates by attacking Hamas positions.
