DAMASCUS, June 24 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed Friday night when a rocket fired by rebels hit a crowded street in Syria's northern city of Aleppo, a medical source in the city told Xinhua.

The rocket, fired by rebels in the countryside of Aleppo, slammed into the al-Furqan street, while people jam-packed the place in preparation for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr feast, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Dozens were wounded in the attack, mostly women and children, some of whom are in critical conditions. Syria's national TV confirmed the incident, which has become rare since the army wrested control over the former rebel-held part east of Aleppo in December last year.

However, the rebels staying in the countryside frequently fire rockets and mortar shells into the city, which had suffered from deadly attacks when the rebels were in control of eastern Aleppo.
