Singapore's manufacturing output rises 5 pct in May

SINGAPORE, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's manufacturing output increased 5 percent year on year or decreased 3.5 percent month on month on a seasonally adjusted basis in May 2017.

Excluding biomedical manufacturing, the country's manufacturing output grew 13.1 percent year on year or fell 4.2 percent month on month, the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) announced on Friday.

The electronics cluster's output increased 35.1 percent month on month in May, while all segments recorded higher output except the data storage segment. In particular, the semiconductors segment posted a robust growth of 48.3 percent. Cumulatively, output of the electronics cluster expanded 36.9 percent year on year in the first five months of 2017.

Output of the precision engineering cluster grew 19.1 percent year on year in May and 19.5 percent year on year in the first five months.

The output of chemicals cluster increased 5.3 percent year on year in May and 2.4 percent year on year in January-May, that of general manufacturing industries cluster fell 9 percent in May and 7.9 percent in January-May.

The output of transport engineering cluster decreased 12.8 percent in May and 11.8 percent in the five months and that of biomedical manufacturing cluster shrank 22.2 percent in May and 13.9 percent in January-May.
