YANGON, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Yangon Region Road Transport Administration Department of Myanmar has deregistered over 2,000 outdated public transport vehicles removing them from running in the former capital, official media reported Friday.

These kind of motor vehicles refer to pre-1995 model buses, trucks and cars.

For the purpose of safety and environmental conservation, deregistration process of old buses began in October last year with 3,117 buses set to stop operating as part of the government's transport reform.

Up till now, the decommissioned vehicles include 1,000 Dyna vehicles, 700 city buses, 300 BM buses, 140 mini-buses and 10 pick-up cars.

At present, thousands of new China-made buses have been introduced to start running in Yangon, aiming to enhance the better transport service and reduce traffic congestion.

In January, the Yangon region government introduced a new bus system, calling on city dwellers to cooperate and promptly adapt to the system.

The system, which reduces the number of bus lines from more than 300 to 70, has eased the traffic jam but caused strand of passengers especially during rush hours.

Finding that it still lacks buses to meet the demand of all residents of Yangon, the regional government imported more new buses.

Over 2 million people are depending on bus lines in Yangon where 6 million people are residing.
