QUITO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's National Assembly on Thursday unanimously ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which sets out measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The country ratified the agreement "in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty, as well as the control of global temperature rise and the strengthening of capacities to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Ecuador's glaciers at Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Carihuairazo and Antisana, have reduced by around 40 percent in recent years, as the country has registered spike in temperature.

"We commit to defining a reduction target for voluntary emissions, reporting advances in reductions, presenting climate change adaptation policies, carrying out the financial evaluation needed to meet this objective, and aligning financial flows toward low emissions," the ministry said.

The Paris Agreement, agreed on by most of the countries in the world in 2015, aims to tackle climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions and sets a global target of keeping the rise in the average temperature no higher than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
