NEW DELHI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- In a horrific incident, a 35-year-old Indian woman was allegedly abducted and gangraped for nearly four hours by three men in a moving car near the capital late Monday night before being thrown off the vehicle in the early hours of Tuesday.
In her police complaint, the woman has alleged the incident took place at 8.30 p.m. (local time) Monday when she was forcibly picked up by the three men in the car from the streets of Sohna, a town some 30 km from the national capital.
Her ordeal did not end there. The woman was taken around in the car for nearly four hours during which the men took turns to rape her before dumping her near a private hospital in Greater Noida in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on the outskirts of Delhi in the early hours of Tuesday.
The woman was noticed lying on the road near the hospital by a passerby Tuesday morning, who then informed the police.
"A team of Noida Police has been sent to Sohna to probe further into the matter. We are also procuring closed-circuit TV camera footage from the areas the car may have passed through and are verifying the woman's statements," Love Kumar, police chief of Greater Noida, told the media.
The incident is a chilling reminder of the brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in December 2012.
Four of the men have been sentenced to death by India's Supreme Court this year, while the main accused committed suicide during the trial and a juvenile accused was released after three years in a remand facility.
Rapes are common in India. Though the Indian government passed stringent laws after the 2012 gangrape incident, but those seemed to be not enough to deter predators from committing sexual assaults on women.
