BISHKEK, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev signed a law aimed at strengthening the power of the country's national security body, the president's press service said Monday.
The law, adopted by the Kyrgyz Parliament on May 25, will strengthen the power of the country's Security Council in taking decisions on foreign and domestic policy aimed at protecting the constitutional order, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Kyrgyzstan, as well as ensuring its sustainable development in the long run, the press service said.
Atambayev signed in March a law on renaming the republic's Defense Council as the Security Council.
Under the new law, the Security Council is tasked with improving the national security system, identifying internal and external risks, forecasting, analyzing and assessing challenges and threats, and developing sufficient preventative measures.
The Security Council also has a right to inspect state bodies on defense and security issues, and also inspect the country's armed forces and law enforcement agencies.
The law also revises the composition, structure and organization of activities of the Security Council. In particular, the parliament will be represented in the Security Council by the speaker,the chairman of the committee responsible for defense and security issues, as well as the majority leader and the opposition leader in the parliament.
