JERUSALEM/RAMALLAH, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Israeli police said they shot dead three Palestinian "terrorists" on Friday after the assailants carried out coordinated attacks in two separate locations in Jerusalem, wounding a policewoman and at least four others.

Both incidents took place near the Old City's flashpoint Damascus Gate at around 19:45 (1645 GMT).

Police spokeswoman Meirav Lapidot said the three assailants were armed with knives and an automatic weapon, and the police shot and killed them at the scenes.

In one of the incidents, two Palestinians attacked with knives a border police force that was stationed near the Old City's Sultan Suliman Street, Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.

One of the assailants was armed with a homemade Carl Gustav rifle, which jammed, said Samri.

The assailants had stabbed an officer before the force shot and killed them, Samri said. The officer, a woman in her early twenties, was evacuated to the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem in a "critical condition," according to a statement released by the hospital.

A few hundred meters away near the Old City's Damascus Gate, a knife-wielding Palestinian attacked Israelis, Israel MDA emergency medical service said.

According to local media, at least five Israelis were injured in both incidents.

Police commissioner Yoram Halevi, the commander of the Jerusalem District, told Channel 2 TV news that the assailants were residents of the West Bank, aged 18-19, who entered Jerusalem without permits.

Halevi said that in the wake of the attacks, the police will consider re-impose some of the restrictions that were lifted to allow in more Muslims from the West Bank and Gaza for prayers in Jerusalem during the holy month of the Ramadan.

Meanwhile, the Ramallah-based Palestinian Health Ministry said in an emailed press statement that Amer Badawi from Hebron, Aadel Ankoosh from Ramallah and the third one unidentified were all killed by Israeli police gunfire in East Jerusalem.

The incidents were the latest in a wave of violence that have claimed the lives of at least 246 Palestinians, 41 Israelis, two Jordanian tourists, two U.S. nationals, two refugees from Sudan and Eritrea, and a British tourist since mid-September 2015. Enditem
