SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 16 (Xinhua) -- At least six policemen including an officer were killed Friday in a militant attack in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The police party was attacked at Thajiwara - Achabal village in Anantnag district, about 65 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This evening a police party led by station house officer Achabal was ambushed by militants near Thajiwara village which resulted in killing of five policemen on spot," a police official posted at police control room Ananatnag told Xinhua. "The officer along with his men was returning from Anantnag when his vehicle came under attack."

The attack created panic in the area.

Local media reports said militants have looted weapons from the policemen.

Following the attack, authorities rushed contingents of police and army to the spot. However, it is believed that militants managed to escape from the spot immediately.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

On Thursday evening, a policeman was killed and another wounded in a similar militant attack in Hyderpora locality of Srinagar. Prior to that militants shot dead a policeman in Kulgam district.

Friday's attack comes despite an alert issued by police in the wake of an increase in militant attacks in districts especially south of Srinagar.

A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them.
