Kyrgyzstan starts nominating candidates for presidency

BISHKEK, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The process of nominating candidates for the presidency started on Thursday in Kyrgyzstan, chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Nurzhan Shaildabekova said.

Speaking at a press conference, she said the Kyrgyz Parliament on Wednesday approved to hold presidential elections on Oct. 15, 2017 and the CEC took a number of decisions to organize the elections.

She said all measures will be taken to conduct fair and transparent elections.

According to the Constitutional Law on presidential and parliamentary elections, the process of nominating candidates for the presidency starts from the day after the announcement of the date of presidential elections. The political parties and citizens of Kyrgyzstan have the right to nominate candidates for the post of head of state. Nomination of candidates will end on Aug. 1.

A number of well-known politicians have already declared their intentions to run for elections.
