BANJUL, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Gambia's former ruling party condemned Wednesday the freezing of its former leader Yahya Jammeh's assets, calling it "unconstitutional."

Fabakary Tombong Jatta, current leader of the Alliance for Patriotic Re-Orientation and Construction (APRC), said the party and its supporters are "deeply worried and concerned about the path the government is taking by freezing the assets of the former president without following due process."

On May 22, Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou announced a court order to seize 86 bank accounts and 131 properties linked to Jammeh, as the new government accused him of stealing state money worth at least 50 million U.S. dollars.

Jatta called the seizure "unlawful and unconstitutional" and describing it as a witch hunt.

Jammeh fled to Equatorial Guinea on Jan. 21 after being defeated in election, ending his 22-year rule.
