BISHKEK, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The Kyrgyz Parliament passed a resolution on Wednesday to set Oct. 15, 2017 as the presidential election day, the Parliament press service said.

Earlier, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev signed amendments to the law on elections, which calls for Oct. 15 as the presidential election date in the country.

According to the amendments, the forthcoming presidential elections will be held a month earlier than originally intended so as to pave the way for a smooth transition of the power because the president's six-year term ends on Dec. 1.

A number of well-known politicians have already declared their intentions to run for the presidential elections.

Current Prime Minister Sooronbai Zheenbekov is nominated by the political council of the ruling party of Kyrgyzstan, but the final decision will be taken at the party conference.
