Nairobi bourse crosses 3,500 points to hit a year high

NAIROBI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 Share Index Wednesday crossed the 3,500 point mark to stand at a year high, boosted by selected large stock price surges.

The benchmark index closed the day at 3,506.90 after rising from 3,487.45 in the previous session following an upward trend.

Similarly, equity turnover went up marginally Wednesday boosted by a slight rise in foreign trading.

The foreign investors' participation stood at 73 percent from 59 percent in the last session, with the traders increasing sales by 45 percent and buys by 16 percent as they traded mainly Safaricom, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), East African Breweries Ltd and Equity Bank.

Turnover stood at 9.6 million U.S. dollars on a volume of 42 million shares from 45 million worth 9.3 million dollars.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom, was the top traded stock after moving 29.2 million shares at a declined price of 0.23 dollars. In the previous session, the telecom moved 22 million shares.

Coming second was Kenya Commercial Bank with 3.1 million shares traded at a declined price of 0.38 dollars, a 0.6 percent drop.

Kenya Airways was third with 2.1 million shares while Mumias Sugar moved 2 million shares to clock the fourth position. HomeAfrika came fifth with 1.5 million shares. Enditem
