NEW DELHI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a bus fell off a bridge on the banks of a river in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, a senior police official said.

"The accident happened in the Bargudar Pul area on the Jaunpur-Rae Bareli national highway this afternoon when the driver suddenly lost control of the speeding state-run bus on the bridge above the Sai river. The bus fell off the bridge and landed on the banks of the river," he said.

The bus belonged to the Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Corporation and was carrying some 50 passengers, apart from the driver and a conductor, from Allahabad to Jaunpur when the incident took place, the official said.

"While eight people, including a woman died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious. Two of the injured have been referred to a government hospital in Varanasi town," he added.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.
