German ZEW economic sentiment falls unexpectedly in June

BERLIN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- German economic sentiment fell unexpectedly in June, the Mannheim-based Centre for European Economic Research(ZEW) reported Tuesday.

It showed, the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany dropped to 18.6 points in June, 2.0 points down from May. The indicator thus still remains below the long-term average of 23.9 points.

By contrast, the assessment of the current economic situation in Germany improved once again in June. The indicator climbed by 4.1 points to 88.0 points, registering the highest level since July 2011.

Despite of the decline in expectations, the outlook for the Europe'e largest economy remains positive.

"The prospects for the German economy remain favorable. This is not least due to the positive gross domestic product growth in the European Union in the first quarter of 2017," said ZEW President Achim Wambach in a statement, "70.8 percent of the financial market experts expect the current situation to remain as favorable as it is at the moment, and 23.9 per cent even expect it to improve in the coming six months."

For the eurozone, ZEW's indicator for the current economic situation in the bloc climbed 2.2 points from May to 20.5 points. And the expectation indicator climbed 2.6 points to 37.7 points.
