LUSAKA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Day against Child Labor on Monday with the government expressing concern over the alarming cases of the problem in the country.

Acting Minister of Labor and Social Security Michael Katambo said the government was concerned over the continued alarming cases of child labor in the country despite efforts to curb the vice.

The country, he said, has over 595,000 child workers in various sectors of the economy.

He however promised that the government was doing everything possible to end all forms of child labor.

The government was in the process of establishing district child labor committees in all the country's districts in order to enhance child labor legislation, he added.

Alexio Musindo, International Labor Organization (ILO) director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique said at the same occasion that the organization was also concerned with the continued problem of child labor not only in Zambia but in Africa as a whole.

He said countries should do more to tackle the problem and promised ILO's unwavering support to help countries combat the problem.

The theme for this year's commemoration is "In Conflicts and Disasters Protect Children from Child Labor".

The day was sanctioned in 2012 with the objective to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labor.
