LONDON, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Are you using washing-up liquid to disinfect your chopping board? The effect will disappoint you as harmful bacteria will stay and make you ill, British media the Mirror reported Saturday.
Used to prepare various food products, including raw meat and vegetables, a chopping board is indispensable for every family. However, experts found that cutting boards harbor 200 percent more fecal bacteria than the average toilet seat.
Cleaning the chopping board is a must, but using washing-up liquid is a wrong choice, the Mirror quoted an expert from Expert Home Tips, an online solution provider for housework, as saying.
Washing-up liquid cannot penetrate the cold surface of a chopping board where harmful bacteria tend to linger. Thus you should use something much stronger to disinfect a chopping board, the report said.
According to U.S. family magazine Reader's Digest, the following treatments can effectively clean your chopping board: full-strength white vinegar can disinfect the wooden surface, hydrogen peroxide can kill bacteria, lemons will remove odors, baking soda combined with salt and water can do a deep cleaning, and salt will brighten its surface.
